Environment
Delek cares about the environment and is committed to minimizing environmental impacts by reducing emissions and other releases and recycling or reducing wastes. We understand that it is a privilege to conduct our business in the communities where we operate.
- Since 2005, Delek Refining has invested more than $300 million in environmental initiatives at our Tyler refinery, demonstrating our commitment to a cleaner environment.
- In 2006 we became one of the first refineries in the U.S. to produce cleaner burning, 100% ultra-low sulfur diesel, ahead of EPA requirements to do so.
- Also in 2006, construction was completed on an additional sulfur recovery unit and tail gas unit that reduced sulfur dioxide emissions by more than 100 tons per year.
- In 2007 we added a new electrical substation dedicated to refinery operations to improve reliability and reduce emissions resulting from power interruptions.
- In 2007 we voluntarily began using a special additive in our FCC unit to reduce emissions of sulfur dioxide.
- In early 2008, we began blending renewable ethanol into all our gasoline to make cleaner-burning E-10.
- In mid-2008 we commenced operation of a gasoline desulfurizer to make low sulfur gasoline that not only reduces sulfur emissions from vehicles but allows catalytic converters to reduce emissions of major components of smog such as nitrogen oxide and hydrocarbons.
- The refinery initiated an enhanced leak detection and repair program to minimize air emissions from the tens of thousands of pumps, valves, flanges and other components at the refinery.
- We are designing a project to reduce benzene levels in our gasoline by more than half beginning in 2011.
- MAPCO Express, our retail arm, has invested millions in environmental compliance for new tanks and lines, leak detection systems, equipment to capture gasoline vapors and projects to clean up the soil and groundwater. MAPCO also blends renewable ethanol into much of the fuel it sells.
- We provide specific environmental training for employees throughout our organization in the areas of hazardous waste minimization, spill prevention, emergency response and fuel distribution practices.
